POLITICS
U.S. Secretary of State Hilary Clinton reiterated the U.S. support for a peaceful settlement of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict. In a letter to the Armenian Foreign Minister, Secretary Clinton also spoke about normalization of Armenia-Turkey relations.
NKR Foreign Ministry called upon the OSCE Minsk Group and its office in Stepanakert to respond adequately to Azerbaijan’s continued violation of the cease-fire. Arkady Ghoukasian, who served as NKR President in 1997-2007, has been appointed Ambassador-at-Large for Republic of Armenia with a diplomatic rank of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary.
BUSINESS & ECONOMY
This sowing season, Artsakhian farmers cultivated twice as much farmland as last year, reported NKR Ministry of Agriculture.
Armenian and NKR tax collection agencies signed a cooperation agreement to facilitate data exchange, expert support and training.
NKR state budget revenues increased by 31.5% in 2008, while tax collection grew by 25% compared to previous year.
SOCIETY
Twenty medical doctors from Armenia’s Gegharkunik Marz spent ten days working in Artsakh’s Martuni region. They also brought with them equipment and pharmaceuticals.
“Shoushi: epitaphs of Christian cemeteries in the XVIII-XIX centuries” is now available in Armenian. Published by the Yerevan State University printing house, this book of Artsakhian researcher Hratch Harutunian was sponsored by the Gulbekian Foundation.
“Destiny” (Chakatagir), an award-winning Armenian-American movie, premiered in Stepanakert, Artsakh. The story develops during the infamous Operation Ring (Kol’tso), in which Soviet and Azeri troops carried out pogroms and mass deportation of Armenians in Nagorno Karabakh.

Forty five young people from Artsakh participated in a commemoration event marking the 350th anniversary of Israel Ori, a prominent leader of the Armenian liberation movement and a fellow Artsakhtsi. The event took place on the section of the Armenian-Turkish border, overlooking Ani, the ancient capital of Armenia.
